Krissy Custis has always been passionate about healthcare and making a lasting impact on people’s lives. Growing up in a family where service to others was paramount, Krissy witnessed her mother’s dedication as a nurse, from working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to serving as a house supervisor for a regional healthcare system. This shaped her deep understanding of the power of care and compassion.

Krissy began her educational journey at AUM from 1996 to 1998 before transferring to Auburn University, where she studied in the Pharmacy department from 1998 to 2002. However, after the loss of her grandfather, Krissy shifted her focus and pursued nursing. She returned to AUM from 2002 to 2004, where she earned her BSN and graduated at the top of her class. Krissy then worked as a Registered Nurse in Montgomery and Birmingham before transitioning to a Flight Nurse role with Air Evac Lifeteam in 2008. Her work in critical care during transport revealed her desire to do even more for the people of Alabama, prompting her decision to return to school and earn her Nurse Practitioner degree.

From 2013 onward, Krissy has been an integral part of the St. Vincent’s healthcare system at the UAB St. Vincent’s East location, where she’s rounded on nearly every ward—from medical and orthopedic units to the psychiatric and ICU floors. Her desire to expand her knowledge led her to earn dual certifications in Acute Care and Family Practice. Since then, Krissy has worked in the UAB St. Vincent’s East Emergency Department, providing vital care to patients in need.

In 2023, fed up with the inefficiencies in delivering high quality healthcare, Krissy teamed up with her husband, Dr. James Custis, to establish Iatria General Medicine. Together, they’re bringing their vision of accessible, high-quality healthcare to the Birmingham area, driven by Krissy’s goal of providing comprehensive care to patients across a wide spectrum of needs.
